Fitness for Service

Fitness-for-Service (FFS), also known as Fitness-for-Purpose, is an evaluation that is conducted in accordance with industry best practices. In order to determine if an asset or component is acceptable for its intended use, the FFS assessment assesses the asset or component's structural integrity. A component of asset integrity management, the Fitness-for-Service (FFS) assessment offers a numerical measurement of structural integrity. The assessments are performed to identify which assets or components require replacement or repair.

What Advantages Does Fitness-for-Service Offer?

  • Fitness-for- Throughout several stages of an asset's life, including design, fabrication, and operation, service can be applied.
  • It can be applied to the management of plant life, including life extension programs.
  • It lessens the need for needless maintenance and replacement.

Uses for Fitness-for-Service:

  • Marine:
  • A stainless steel pipework's weld zones with high hardness values were evaluated using a Fitness-for-Service examination..
  • A subsea pipeline that had been dented by a tanker's anchor was investigated using the fitness-for-service method.
  • Power generation – Pressure Vessel: Examining corroded wood pulp digesters with Fitness-for-Service 
  • Oil and Gas Industry – Piping Systems:
  • TWI performed a Fitness-for-Service assessment on a cross-country pipeline based on the damage that was evident.
  • TWI conducted a Fitness-for-Service evaluation in response to a pipeline that had a slight root undercut.

  • Over 5,300 meters of pipeline were examined by Plant Integrity Ltd., a TWI subsidiary, using a number of evaluations, including Fitness-for-Service.
